Destroyer Command
Project: Self-Motivated Work
Year: 2006
Role(s): Game Designer and Programmer
Destroyer Command is a flash game demo that puts the user in control of a large spaceship instead of a puny space fighter, which is so often the case in other games. The concept behind the game was to make the user in control of a ship with many capabilities, and to place the challenges on strategy and tactics rather than the quick trigger-finger style of many current space shooters.
The player's ship includes 3 turrets that auto-track targets. The player orders the crew to open fire by holding the spacebar, and directs the ship with the arrow keys. The game demo features a short tutorial to accustom the user with controlling the ship.
The player can find bonus items including upgraded turrets and shields. When the ship’s health is low, smoke begins to pour out from the sides of the ship.
Currently, the controls and interactivity of the game demo are under review. Some suggested changes include targeting specific ships by clicking on them, introducing auto-acquiring turrets as an upgrade, and simplifying the movement controls.
