This 3D model was a self-motivated work to sharpen modelling skills and to explore specular and normal mapping.
Particular care was taken to minimise the polygon count on the model. I wanted to make an octagonal handle, to fit with the dwarf theme I was trying to achieve. If the weapon was going to have a round handle, I might have opted for a hexagonal handle with softened normals instead.
The gold texture and the leather handle texture were both created from scratch. I built the rest of the diffuse texture by modifying rock and concrete textures found on CGTextures.com, a free textures website.
The specular and normal maps were generated using a trial version of CrazyBump. Whilst I could have built the normals from a high-detail mesh, I found CrazyBump saved a lot of time and achieved an outstanding result.
